Energy Efficiency at School
In Turkey there are 550,000 teachers, 10 million parents and about 20 million students. And the number of people connected to this education sector is almost equal to half of Turkey’s population. So, this being the case, why not bring the efficient and economical use of our energy into schools?
The efficient use of energy resources in schools is important both in terms of making effective use of public resources and instilling sustainable lifestyle habits in pupils.
Printers, photocopiers, televisions, sound systems and other office equipment used in schools should be switched off when not in use. As these devices continue to consume a certain amount of energy even in standby mode – particularly as they will not be used overnight – the plugs of devices that are safe and suitable to do so should be removed from sockets or power strips switched off after lessons have finished. Work on the electrical panel or fuse box should only be carried out by authorised personnel, taking the school’s safety systems into account.
When purchasing electrical appliances used in schools, such as air conditioning units, fridges, washing machines and dishwashers, products with high energy efficiency should be prioritised.
School management should also ensure that periodic maintenance is carried out on heating boilers, that inefficient ones are replaced, and that the insulation levels of school buildings’ walls, windows and roofs are improved.
